The History of Vacuum Cleaner Bags

!±8± The History of Vacuum Cleaner Bags

The debris picked up by all of the different types of vacuum cleaners and units on the market has to be deposited somewhere -- usually in a vacuum cleaner bag.

In 1920 the Air Way Sanitizer Company of Ohio introduced the first vacuum cleaner with a disposable bag. Up until that time, vacuum cleaner bags resembled the type of bags golfers use to carry their clubs. They were heavy and unwieldy devices made out of thick, stiff canvas, designed to be somewhat flexible and yet keep the dust and debris from the carpets from escaping.

The improvement made by the Air Way Sanitizer disposable vacuum cleaner bag went a long way towards improving the overall effectiveness of the vacuum cleaner. The bag, made out of paper, was designed to fit inside the cloth bag typically used. It not only made cleaning the vacuum easier but it kept the insides of the stationary bag clean at all times so that less of the dust and debris could be blown back out of the vacuum cleaner and throughout the house once again.

Early on, each manufacturer designed its own disposable vacuum cleaner bag made out of different types of paper. The bags were not interchangeable from one machine to another, as the fittings were of different sizes with different configurations for the intake opening. Manufacturers, once dependent solely on the sales of their machines, had discovered an entire new market for the disposable bags and once again sales soared.

Previously, a housewife had her machine and the only thing it needed was occasional cleaning and service. If the man of the house was handy, that job usually went to him. But after a while, repair shops specializing in vacuum cleaners were springing up everywhere.

But now, every vacuum cleaner in America was going to need at least one new, disposable vacuum cleaner bag every month and that represented an unanticipated windfall for the companies. It was not until many years later, when the dimensions of the air inlets became uniform and the advent of the bag-less machine that this lucrative aftermarket began to slow down.

Are Dyson the Best Vacuum Cleaners That Money Can Buy?

!±8± Are Dyson the Best Vacuum Cleaners That Money Can Buy?

When James Dyson set out to create a bagless vacuum cleaner driven by just a cyclone of air he started on a path that would revolutionise the way vacuum cleaners looked and worked forever. Whilst more expensive than the vast majority of their competitors Dyson cleaners promise uncompromising suction from the moment you switch it on. It is in absolutely no doubt that many other manufacturers have witnessed the performance from the range of Dyson hoovers and many have brought out similar bagless models. These competitors are usually at a lower price point than the equivalent Dyson cleaner so is there still a reason to purchase the more expensive Dyson model?

Advantages of Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

All Dyson hoovers are bagless which has a number of advantages over bagged cleaners. Anyone over a certain age will almost certainly remember the old vacuums used from twenty to thirty years ago. These were commonly either upright cleaners or cylinders that had very few attachments and tended to lose suction quite quickly. You then had to take the device outside whilst the bag was removed, if you did it inside you'd end up scattering dirt and dust everywhere again which kind of defeated the purpose, and then replace the half full bag you've just removed with a new one. Bagless hoovers, like all Dyson models, are much simpler to use. As there is no bag the dust and dirt is gathered in a, usually, see through container and once full is simply removed from the vacuum and taken outside to the rubbish where it is emptied with very little fuss or mess. Bagless vacuum cleaners, like the Dyson models, do not lose suction so you can continue to use them until they are full. You do not have to replace expensive bags so the running costs are lower and it is easy to remove the dust container and clean it ocassionally to keep it looking like new.

Should You Buy Dyson Instead of a Competitor

Given that the majority of Dyson's competitors quickly caught onto the revolution they worked tirelessly to catch up with the pioneer and soon began to release competitive models. One downside of a Dyson vacuum cleaner is the price as they tend to be a bit more expensive than other brands. Dyson have managed to retain their number one position however as the recognised brand leader by boasting ever improving suction along with other enhancements such as the rollerball vacuum cleaner. This model replaced the traditional base unit with a roller ball, the idea being that the hoover became instantly easier to maneuver than traditional models. So the end result comes down to brand versus price.

Properly Servicing Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

!±8± Properly Servicing Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaners

A lot of people nowadays own upright bagless vacuum cleaners but have no idea how to properly service them. Just like a car or any household equipment, vacuums need regular servicing to ensure optimum performance. If anyone in the household has any allergies or any respiratory problems, it is crucial that your vacuum cleaner is working at its peak, so it can suck up the most allergens and dust particles inside the house. Some vacuum cleaners are frankly quite expensive, which is why regular servicing is all the more essential to ensure that your bagless vacuum will last for many years to come.

Before you start servicing your vacuum cleaner, you will need the following materials: a can of compressed air, a pair of needle nose pliers, three in one oil, and a stiff bristle paintbrush. Once you have gathered all the necessary materials, you can now prepare an area in your garage or basement for you to be able to move freely while servicing your vacuum. To minimize any dust inhalation, it is highly recommended that you pick an open area or an area with good ventilation. An open garage or the backyard would be great, just to make sure that you do not inhale any dust particles or allergens while servicing your vacuum cleaner.

You can begin by carefully removing the dust canister or collector as well as the filter. Pay close attention to the filter and remove any dust or debris build-up. If the filter is washable, then perhaps you should wash it carefully with soap and hot water. Either way, the filter of your vacuum should be replaced twice or three times a year. A clean filter helps ensure the optimum suction power of the vacuum cleaner. If your bagless vacuum cleaner has a Hepa filter, you may want to consider the manufacturer's recommendation on the cleaning process or the replacement frequency of the filter.

Once you have removed the dust canister and the filter, you can now turn your vac upside down to check the brush rollers. See if there are any hairs, threads, or strings that have become entangled in the rollers preventing it from rolling freely. If possible, you may want to take the whole thing out and check for any cracks or wear and tear. You can use your paintbrush to carefully clean the brush rollers. Do not forget to check the belt cover as well and see if there are any cracks or dry-rotting present. You can easily replace the belt cover with brand new ones that are available in any Wal-mart stores or other retailers.

The next thing you should do is check the integrity of the wheels of your bagless vacuum cleaners. If necessary, you can apply the three in one oil to ensure that the wheels are functioning properly. After taking apart all the removable components, you must take some time to brush off any remaining dust or dirt stuck in some of the components. You can use your can of compressed air for this one. Make sure to blow off the dust particles that may be stuck inside the intake valve of your vacuum cleaner. Once you have done all the necessary tasks, you can now start to carefully put all the components back in their rightful places. You should perform regular service on your vacuum cleaner at least two times a year.
